Podcast #72-Conversation with Deadhead Marc James
Welcome back from Stangers Stopping Strangers September hiatus – summer time come- come and gone, my oh my! I met Marc through Twitter, he is a podcaster- along with a few co hosts on a really fun podcast called The Poop Culture.
As a secret deadhead he found me- and when I checked out The Poop Culture we messaged and struck up an IM friendship. Marc was a fresh breath of Deadhead air. He is 40 years old, with memories that go back over over 30 years. While he had a brief pause in middle school and tells a really funny W.T.F. story after he finally hears The Grateful Dead from a gifted Skeletons In the Closet cassette and thinks “this sucks- its COUNTRY?!?”. Fast forward to high school when he fell in love with The Dead climbed on the bus & has been a “closeted deadhead” ever since. He was so grateful to have the chance to wave his flag and talk to another Deadhead that “got it” I assured him that I would be the first of many to “get it”
Marc and I discuss his initiation to the Grateful Dead song book via studio albums, with a graduation into live shows. We both agreed there is something comforting and special about the spectacular live shows ( and live versions of songs) that were made into studio albums – in particular Without A Net and Cornell 77′. Marc and I trade notes on how we have master playlists that then get broken down into categories that we run though, I shared my love for the playlist of ballads that are always there with a message that resonates- whether it is coming from Stella Blue, Ripple, Crazy Fingers and my current obsession Jerry Garcia Bands ” My Sisters and Brothers”. Marc just digging into the world of Jerry Garcia Band was not familiar, so we did a deviation in the set list…..
Having the opportunity to talk to Marc after a couple months off of recording was such a wonderful reminder of how grateful I am to be a part of this community. The strangers I have met virtually- as guests I have still yet to meet in person, guests I now get to hang out with and call my friends & what an honor it is to be a conduit for sharing the stories and music with and from the Deadheads via Strangers Stopping Strangers- for that I am truly grateful
